Remember that each vowel (a, e, i, o, and u) has two sounds: short and long. The short sound for the letter i is /͝ i / and the long sound says its name, /͞͞͞ i /. We learned that when you see an e at the end of the word, the vowel before it says its name. For example, the letters b, i, t spell the word bit. When you add an e to the end of the word it changes to bite, with a long i sound in the middle. The e at the end is silent -- we don't hear it.  It is just there to make the i say the sound of its name. Listen for the long i sound in these words. Notice that each word has an i in the middle and ends with the letter e.
