A suffix is a word or letters that is put at the end of a word. A suffix changes the meaning of a word. The suffix -able means capable or worthy of. For example, affordable means able to be afforded. It is more common for a word to end in –able than for it to end with –ible, another suffix meaning the same thing. How do you know which one to use? Usually, if you take –able away from the word you are left with a whole word (laugh-able). This is not usually true for words that end in –ible. Notice that each of these words ends in –able.
